There will be no Beyonce this year. And Madonna's recent visit culminated in her agreeing to perform on New Year's - but not until next year.
No matter. This year's lineup includes a stellar cast, with 24 attractions on four stages. Headliners scheduled to perform include Paralamas do Sucesso, Lulu Santos, Ed Motta, Beth Carvalho, Blitz and the Salgueiro samba school, Beija-Flor.
2009 New Year's Eve celebration along Copacabana beach
Fireworks will be launched from nine ferries in the ocean along Copacabana beach.
Nine New Year's wishes will be translated and dramatized during the program. They include renewal, prosperity, peace, happiness, friends, family, love, Brazil and the future.
The soundtrack to every wish will be interpreted by artists such as Seu Jorge and Heaven.
The main stage will be set up in front of the Copacabana Palace Hotel. The selection of Rio de Janeiro as the host of the 2016 summer Olympics will be one of the ten outstanding events of 2009 displayed on two jumbo screens.
Things get cranked up early. The sound system on the main stage will start operating at 10AM.
In addition to the traditional Copacabana festivities, there will be concerts in Penha, Ramos, Paqueta, Flamengo, Sepetiba and Guaratiba.
