Flamengo Wins 2009 Brazilian Championship



On Sunday, in front of 85,000 at the Maracanã in Rio, Flamengo won their sixth Campeonato Brasileiro. It was their first title in 17 years.

Flamengo is Brazil's most famous club team. They also won the Brasileiro in 1980, 1982, 1983, 1987 and 1992.

Flamengo is one of four local Rio teams, along with Fluminense, Vasco de Gama and Botafogo.

Flamengo trains in the Zona Sul, in Leblon.

Adriano, who is fighting for a spot on the national team for next summer's World Cup, finished as the league's top scorer with 19 goals.

David and Angelim scored the goals to edge Gremio 2-1. They finished the season with 67 points, two clear of Internacional and Sao Paulo.

Cruzeiro was fourth to grab the last spot in next year's Copa Libertadores, Latin America's most important futebol competition.
