Video: Forro in the Dark w/ David Byrne

Forró is the music of the northeast in Brazil. It's roots music, somewhat like American country music.

Forro in the Dark is a New York-based group of Brazil ex-pats that combine the percussion-heavy, rhythmic dance music of their native Brazil, with elements of rock, folk, jazz, and country.

To celebrate their first album in 2006, Bonfires of São João, they did what all Brazilians do - they had a party. And they invited a few special guests including David Byrne, Bebel Gilberto and Miho Hatori.

David Byrne's interest in Brazilian music can be traced back to his days
as a front man for Talking Heads

This live performance of Asa Branca was recorded at Joe's Pub in NYC. The lyrics can be a tad difficult to understand on this version. On YouTube, I've also got a studio version of the song set to a fun Sgt. Pepper's-like animated video.

Asa Branca is a song that was written in the 1940's by Luiz Gonzaga and Humberto Teixeira. It's about the droughts so common to the sertão of the Brazilian Northeast.

The asa branca, white wing, of the title is the picazuro pigeon. With its departure the desolation of the parched sertão is complete, and the protagonist, unable to make a living, must leave the sertão and his love, Rosinha.

Heavy with saudades, the song closes with his promise to someday return.
