Brazil is ranked as the 7th best retirement destination in the world, well ahead of the U.S. which was ranked 22nd. Half of the top 8 are in South America.
Of course, you need to take these kinds of rankings with a grain of salt. They're good as generalizations, but certainly more art than science.

Brazil is a massive melting pot of a country full of warm people,
cosmopolitan cities and gorgeous ocean coastline
The criteria used to judge the countries included: real estate, entertainment, recreation and culture, cost of living, safety, health care, infrastructure and climate.
I was an IL subscriber in 2001, when Panama was deemed to be the best. I still have some of those issues. I just looked at the Sept. 2001 issue which featured the 10th Annual Global Retirement Index.
Brazil was nowhere to be found.
And that was back when USD$1 would buy you BR$4! Obviously, Brazil was a much better place to retire at those exchange rates than it is today. If only the IL editors had told you about it then and you'd bought real estate at those exchange rates!

One more reason to love Brazil is frequently featured in SI's annual swimsuit issue
But I guess the IL editors read the papers and are simply jumping on the bandwagon at this point.
Even though their publication has always lacked decent coverage of South America's dominant nation in favor of their nook-based "discoveries," even they know that Brazil has struck oil, figured out energy independence and are in-line to host South America's first Olympic games in 2016.
And I'm sure they're heard about those 4,655 miles of gorgeous ocean beaches.
Whatever. The secret's out.
And besides, there are millions of "nooks" to be discovered in a country that is as big and beautiful as Brazil.
There's plenty of room for all. Come on down and enjoy your life.

Of course, you can take my recommendation with a grain of salt, as well. If I were doing the rankings, Brazil would be number 1 every year.
