American Airlines AAdvantage and Brazil's
GOL Airlines Link Up

by Tim Winship

As of March 10, members of American's AAdvantage program can redeem their miles for award flights on Brazilian carrier GOL, one of South America's largest airlines.

American and GOL have been frequent flyer partners since August 2009, when members of AAdvantage and GOL's Smiles program could start earning miles when traveling on each other's flights.

In November, Smiles members began redeeming their miles for flights on American.

And this month, with AAdvantage members' ability to use their miles for GOL flights, the relationship becomes fully reciprocal.

Among U.S. carriers, American has the most service to Brazil, with flights to Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Recife, and Salvador from Miami, New York, and Dallas/Fort Worth.

GOL operates 800 daily flights to 50 destinations in Brazil and ten cities in South America and the Caribbean.

Later this year, American and GOL will begin codeshare flights, making it that much easier for U.S.-originating travelers to fly to destinations within Brazil, and for Brazil-originating travelers to reach interior U.S. points.

Forbes: Brazil's Batista the World's 8th Richest

Brazilian energy entrepreneur Eike Batista, made the biggest leap up Forbes' list of the world's richest people this year.

A half-German college dropout who for years struggled to emerge from the shadow of his well-known father, Batista has long said that he wants nothing less than to be Brazil's and the world's richest person.

He took a big leap to the grander goal on Wednesday when the Forbes list showed him bolting up to 8th place as his wealth more than tripled to $27 billion from 61st place last year.

Rio entrepreneur Eike Batista is now the world's 8th richest person

Batista, who works in a beach-front Rio office, has become the business face of Brazil's remarkable turnaround from basket case to economic powerhouse over the past decade and become one of the country's best-known personalities along the way.

"He is the person that took most advantage of this Brazil that the world is discovering now," said Francois Moreau, a former oil executive who works as an independent energy analyst in Rio.

A top-class speedboat racer who was married to a famous Rio de Janeiro Carnival queen, Batista recently dined with U.S. pop star Madonna in Rio and reportedly handed her a check over dinner for $7 million as a donation for her social projects.

Batista says that a desire to emerge from his father's shadow has driven much of his ambition. He also has a burning ambition to transform Rio into a modern, thriving city that his two young sons, Olin and Thor, will want to live in.

He bought one of the city's most famous old hotels and is spending millions of dollars to modernize it. And just before Rio was awarded the 2016 Olympic Games last year, he bought up a nearby marina that will be a hub of the games -- another example of his eye for a well timed deal.

Lula Chimes In On Ronaldinho

Brazilian President Lula told the Associated Press in a wide-ranging interview on topics including Iran, that Ronaldinho “does not deserve to play in the World Cup.”

Ronaldinho Gaúcho's ommission from the seleção this summer at South Africa 2010 is nearly assured. Coach Dunga, who has said that he'll retire after the World Cup, has implicitly stated that Ronaldinho will not be in South Africa.

But in Brazil, even the President gets involved when it comes to the World Cup. At least, this one does.

Lula chimed in on Ronaldinho's World Cup status
in a wide-ranging interview today

The President stated, “He is a player of great quality, but this is not enough. You need to see how each player fits into the development of the selection (seleção).

"It is something greater than the individual player, is a group question. Ronaldinho does not deserve to go to the World Cup. He played quite a few times with the national team and was not decisive.”

Not even his recent good form for AC Milan
could get Ronaldinho back into Brazil's national side

Unlike his predecessor, Lula is a huge fan of the seleção, who frequently gives his thoughts on the team. This comment came the day after former manager Mario Zagallo made similar comments regarding Dinho’s exclusion this summer.

Guns 'N Roses Planning Secret Show in Rio

The last time Guns 'N Roses was in Brazil they played Rock in Rio in 2001.

Their upcoming "secret" show in Rio will be more cozy - just 150 people will be invited.

Guns N'Roses will play three private shows in Brazil and Argentina during the band's current tour of South America, the organizer said on Monday.

The shows are set for undisclosed locations in São Paulo on Thursday and Buenos Aires on March 20. The Rio date has not been set.

Rock in Rio 2001 was a huge festival with GNR, Neil Young & Crazy Horse,
REM, Iron Maiden, Sepultura, James Taylor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz,
Britney Spears and many more

Organizer Jamison Ernest said each of the three venues will hold about 150 people. He declined to reveal too much information for fear of riots by uninvited guests. He will co-host the São Paulo show with Brazilian model Ana Beatriz Barros.

The 11-date tour, the band's first trek around the continent since its heyday in 1992, began on Sunday in Brasilia. Dates are on tap through April 1 in Quito, Ecuador. The band will also play Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Venezuela and Colombia.

Ana Beatriz Barros will co-host GNR's exclusive
Sao Paulo show on Thursday, March 11th

Guns N'Roses previously played three secret shows, two in New York City and one in London.

Axl Rose is the only remaining member left from the band when its popularity peaked during a decade spanning the 1980s and 1990s. The other members were either ousted or quit.

Although its 2008 album "Chinese Democracy," its first release in 17 years, was a flop, the band remains a strong concert draw.

Brazil's 10 Millionth Ethanol Flex-Fuel Vehicle Hits the Road

by Nick Chambers

Brazil has some of the best land and climate in the world with which to grow sugarcane–which they have proven is an excellent feedstock for first generation ethanol production.

Not only is it incredibly easy to convert the cane sugar into ethanol through fermentation, they can power much of their ethanol production by burning the material leftover after harvesting and crushing the sugarcane to extract the liquid.

Years ago the Brazilian government realized the potential in this system and started encouraging a major shift to a transportation sector capable of running mostly on ethanol. And now the fruits of their labor are being borne out: The 10 millionth ethanol flex-fuel capable vehicle has been delivered in Brazil.

Brazil's successful ethanol program is fed by hectares of sugarcane fields, unlike the U.S.'s expensive, subsidized corn ethanol program / photo: Eugeni Dodonov

Almost all vehicles sold in Brazil are flex-fuel capable (up to 85% ethanol blends, E85) and some are even compatible with 100% ethanol (E100). Every gas station in the country sells E85 and almost all sell E100. This has all been accomplished without government subsidies. As the Brazilian sugarcane organization, UNICA, likes to boast, the industry is completely self sustaining at this point. I’ve written about all this in the past, but as a recap, Brazil’s ethanol success is documented in these statistics:

* All fuel sold in Brazil contains a minimum 20-25% blend of ethanol
* The unsubsidized Brazilian ethanol industry offers a fuel that is on average $1 below the price of gas
* Virtually all 33,000 Brazilian gas pumps offer E100
* Just 1% of the arable land in Brazil is being used to produce sugarcane ethanol
* 45% of Brazilian fuel for cars is from sugarcane
* The food industry is growing faster than the ethanol industry, disproving the food vs. fuel arguments in Brazil
* 90% of all new automobiles sold are flex-fuel automobiles
* 100% of GM vehicles produced in Brazil are flex-fuel

This all lies in stark contrast to the U.S. where decades of contradictory and unsteady biofuels policy has led to a situation where our fledgling ethanol industry is dominated by heavily-subsidized corn ethanol and uber-powerful agri-lobbies in DC—who most often have government-funded corporate profits clearly in their sights, and couldn’t care less about doing what’s right for the people or the environment.

our current biofuels policy is so tortured with ideology, protectionism, and backasswards thinking that we have essentially prohibited the importation of sustainable Brazilian sugarcane ethanol into this country. We apply an insane amount of taxes and tariffs to any incoming ethanol from foreign countries while we simultaneously dump about 45 cents of taxpayer money into subsidizing every gallon of US made ethanol.

Now, I’m not a big proponent of shipping fuels all over the world… that’s something we should really be getting away from in the long term, no? However, if we have a neighboring country that is friendly to us and has a resource they are more than willing to sell that is cheaper and more ecologically sound than anything we could make at the moment, why are we pricing it out of the market? Does that make sense?

It’s not right for the people of the US and it’s not right for the environment. Even though the common sense in this argument seems to favor Brazilian ethanol being sold here, I certainly have very little hope that it will ever be so.

Brazil Raises Tariffs on U.S. Goods

Looks like U.S. Sec. of State Hillary Clinton's meeting last week in Brazil didn't go well on the Iran issue or on trade either.

On Monday, Brazil said it would raise tariffs on $591 million worth of U.S. products in the latest twist in its showdown over U.S. cotton subsidies it has blasted as unfair.

In June 2008, the WTO ruled that subsidies to U.S. cotton producers were discriminatory.

Under WTO rules, sanctions can be imposed until the offending party brings its trade regime into line with international rules.

During the Doha Round, the U.S. government blamed Brazil and India for being inflexible, and the EU for impeding agricultural imports. Lula responded by arguing that progress would only be achieved if the richest countries make deeper cuts in their agricultural subsidies, and further open their markets for agricultural goods

Bilateral trade between Brazil and the United States reached $46.3 billion last year.

The list of about a hundred products included many luxury consumer items, such as cosmetics (shampoos, cologne, beauty creams), appliances (televisions, sound and kitchen equipment) and cars, for which Brazil intends to raise levies.

A further maximum of $238 million in penalties may also be applied in the intellectual property and services sectors.

In a landmark decision, the World Trade Organization (WTO) allowed Brazil to impose up to 829.3 million dollars in retaliatory sanctions against the United States over unfair US cotton subsidies.

US Commerce Secretary Gary Locke will travel to Brasilia on Tuesday, US embassy officials said, as the two countries remain engaged in negotiations to settle the dispute.

On March 3, Brazil gave the United States a 30-day deadline to reach a bilateral agreement to avoid higher levies.

"There is time for us to resolve this in a peaceful and productive way without any further action," Hillary Clinton said during a visit to Brazil last week.

Carlos Marcio Cozendey, head of the economics division at the Brazilian foreign affairs ministry, said "we want a comprehensive solution to this issue; so far we have not received a concrete response."

Brazil Mayor Bans "Sex Bracelets" from Schools

A Brazilian mayor has banned so-called "sex bracelets" worn by children to flaunt their sexual preferences from all public schools, saying they lead to inappropriate discussions.

The town of Navegantes is located in Santa Catarina on the coast, south of Rio. Navegantes Mayor Roberto Carlos de Souza said, "I passed the law because this business leads to wrong discussions about sex.

"We have 12-year-olds speaking inappropriately about sex because of this fad."

Color-coded bracelets have been re-purposed by
Brazilian kids to indicate their sexual preferences,
according to the Navegantes, SC, mayor

He said the bracelets were now banned in all local public schools and teachers would be required to give students sex education and explain to parents what the wristbands indicated.

The cheap, brightly colored plastic bracelets - similar to those used in health, fitness and political campaigns - have apparently been re-purposed by students to express their sexual preferences.

Red is said to indicate kissing, while violet indicates sexual intercourse and black stands for sodomy.

The bracelets are reportedly used in a game of tag where the bracelet is broken off and its wearer is required to perform the color-coded act.

Navegantes teachers discovered the game after two children were caught hugging intimately in a school in nearby Itajai.

Fortaleza, CE, Wins New STX Europe Shipyard in Brazil

STX Europe will expand its shipbuilding capacity for Offshore & Specialized vessels by setting up a new shipyard. The yard will be located in Fortaleza, in the Ceará state of Brazil.

Since the acquisition of the Niteroi shipyard in 2001, STX Europe has successfully delivered more than twenty vessels in the range from platform supply vessels to anchor handling tug supply vessels, ROV and pipe-laying construction vessels.

In the past few months, the yard has received orders for three new advanced PSV offshore vessels, and currently has eight vessels in the backlog for delivery up to 2013.

To meet the increased demand for building of more complex vessels in Brazil, STX Norway Offshore AS (subsidiary of STX Europe AS) along with its Brazilian partner PJMR intends to invest approx $100m over the next three years.

The project is expected to benefit from domestic financing on favorable terms, supported by governmental resources.

According to Roy Reite, President of STX Europe's Offshore & Specialized Vessels business area: Production capacity is estimated to be approx 20,000 tons of steel per year. The total yard area is 320.000 m2. Production start is planned within a two-year period. The new shipyard will have about 1500 employees in addition to subcontractors.

Video: On the Beach with Daniela Cicarelli

This (in)famously steamy beach video of Daniela Cicarelli was shot by paparazzi in Brazil.

When it originally surfaced, Cicarelli sued YouTube for showing it. The São Paulo Supreme Court ordered that YouTube find a way to block the video or to shut down their site until they could block it.

Daniela Cicarelli didn't intend for you to see this video

Quickly thereafter, Brasil Telecom and other ISPs implemented a block on the site, making YouTube inaccessible in Brazil. The decision was reversed a few days later and the block was removed.

Click here to see the video.

Finally, a Brazilian judge told Cicarelli that since the sex took place in public, she was not entitled to privacy and therefore had acted in bad faith in trying to get the video removed.

She was ordered to pay R$10,000, as well as court and legal costs.

'ta bem, Dani. Nos nao podemos mesmo ver a sua boceta!

Hillary Clinton in Brazil to Meet with Lula

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Brasília today to meet with Lula and other top officials.

Part of a multi-country tour which included Uruguay and Chile, Clinton hopes to persuade Brazil to take a tougher stance with Iran.

On Monday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met
with Argentina President Cristina Fernandez / photo:AP

The U.S. pressure on Brazil to vote for new U.N. sanctions against Iran is likely to fail. Lula hosted Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in November and plans a trip to Iran in May.

With Brazil asserting itself as a growing power in the Americas and in the world, U.S. officials say they want to persuade Lula to assume more responsibility for global security, particularly when it comes to Iran.

Brazilian officials are known to feel strongly that it is best to have the world seek closer economic ties with Tehran and to negotiate with Iran so the country doesn't feel isolated from the rest of the world.

The Obama administration, backed by allies Britain, France and Germany, is leading the charge to impose new sanctions on Iran. They appear to have won the reluctant support of Russia.

The Chinese, who also hold veto power on the Security Council, remain opposed.

The U.S. grip on Latin America has been slipping for several years. The recent creation of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, a rival to the Organisation of American States marks some of the frustrations with American hegemonic tendencies.

The Community is “a regional organization, whose only clear feature so far is that it will exclude the U.S. and Canada”, according to Kevin Casas-Zamora of Brookings.
